“The Pipe Dream Of A Smoke-Free World”
So if you haven’t heard already, apparently the WHO views e-cigarettes as a “threat”, and no, I’m not talking about the rock band of the same name. Instead, I’m referring to the World Health Organization (WHO), and yes, it seems that e-cigarettes, as far as they are concerned, are a “threat”.
A threat to what is anyone’s guess, though I have my assumptions. But so far, in all, the European Union, the World Health Organization and America’s good ole’ Food and Drug Administration, have all jumped onboard the same boat. Their vision is apparently to create a world that is completely smoke-free, and the key word there would be ‘smoke’-free. Yet they wish to slap the same restrictions cuffed around the wrists of Big Tobacco upon the entire e-cigarette market, making any and all such nicotine/vapor delivery devices a ‘Tobacco Product’. Yeah… that makes sense… doesn’t it?
I mean, first of all, these e-cigarette devices that I speak of, they contain absolutely no tobacco whatsoever, so, of course, it would only be logical, looking at it from a purely political point of view, that we label them as ‘Tobacco Products’… right?
Secondly, though, and getting back to that whole smoke-free world idea, are they all just going to ignore the blatant fact that there is no smoke at all involved with any such e-cigarette device, that the act of heating a liquid solution through the process of atomization produces no more than a simple vapor? And while I’m on that subject, I genuinely believe that there are a lot of people out there that just don’t get that. They truly don’t understand the technology involved with the various shapes and forms of this e-cigarette revolution which we are all living in. This is the future, and unfortunately, there are just far too many people that refuse to stop living in the past.
Case in point… a friend of mine was randomly ordered by the security guard of an unnamed home improvement store to “Put that out! Ain’t no smokin’ in here!”
That command then prompted the explanation to slip from my lips of how it wasn’t smoke at all that she had seen, but simply a water based vapor that is completely approved safe by the FDA, and that the same base glycol’s and glycerin’s were already used in many of the food that she eats on an everyday basis.
My response, though, only confused the woman that much more. I almost felt like Obi-won Kenobi, and I was trying to convince her, with no force powers at all, that these weren’t the droids she was looking for… and she just wasn’t buying it.
“Don’t matter… no smokin’!”
That was her response… simple, straight and to the point. But I genuinely believe that in her mind, that was smoke that she saw, and we were all just carrying around some funny looking pipes or something, trying to trick her in some way. And that brings me to my ultimate point… the general public must be taught these things. They must be educated, and they must be educated by us, lest they all be brainwashed by the national media that will only pander to the will of the all powerful FDA.
The stigma being placed upon e-cigarettes of all kinds, so soon after being praised for their tobacco deleting effects, is no more than a petty attempt by the FDA and the politicians that lie in bed with the Big Tobacco companies to negate all of the good that these products have brought to so many, without ever lining the pockets of their own wallets with any of that money in the process. They want us to believe that it’s all about safety, and that this vapor movement is somehow harmful, while providing us with no such facts to support their claims.
They may act as if they care about our personal health, but if they did, the arrival of e-cigarettes would have been welcomed with open arms as an effective way to reduce smoking. If they did, the world’s most available carcinogen, the king of all death rates, the leading cause of preventable death in all of the United States – more than AIDS, alcohol, car accidents, illegal drugs, murders and suicides combined – Big Tobacco, the almighty cigarette, would have been long done away with. But instead it was commercialized on the big screen while simultaneously being demonized in every single household, deemed a legal and cool yet still somehow evil entity… something you weren’t allowed to touch until you’d reached a certain age, like some sort of inhalable ascension ritual into adulthood. And of course, those restrictions made you want it even more, just like the apple hanging from that tree in the Garden of Eden. Thus the Apple and Eve effect has already begun.
You find a way to ‘ascend’ into adulthood before your time, get hooked at an early age and smoke into your twenties, thirties, beyond… and hopefully you try to quit a few times along the way, using nicotine patches and gum, which is what the FDA actually recommends, because they get money from each and every one of those smoking cessation companies so they can remain FDA approved, only for each one to fail every time because THEY DON’T WORK, and the vicious cycle resumes, continually dumping money back into the pockets of Big Tobacco, who thus pays the FDA their own large amounts of money to simply stay in business. And all the while, the FDA makes no such money from anything involving e-cigarettes, because while e-cigarettes are not technically FDA approved, the base ingredients used to create the e-liquids (Propylene glycol and Vegetable glycerin) have long since been approved for human consumption by the FDA, thus making e-cigarettes far safer than their poison laced cousins that are absolutely NOT safe for human consumption, yet for some strange reason, while cigarettes kill on average over FIVE MILLION people each year, worldwide, and e-cigarettes have not attributed to a single known death, it is the e-cigarette that is now considered to be a ‘threat’.
So… are you still with me?
Alright, good… because if the FDA, or the EU, or the WHO has its way, that vicious cycle will continue unabated, because cigarettes will suddenly become much more available that their electronic evolution, just like the old days… just like they like it.
They wish to turn a tobacco-less substance into a ‘Tobacco Product’, with the same restrictions that are placed upon cigarettes. That means they’ll be subject to the same anti-smoking campaigns, the same stigmas, the same absurd taxes, and the same impossible to pay permits issued by the FDA, all but assuring that the only ones to profit from this evolution of the cigarette, the only ones capable of shelling out that much cash to the FDA, will be Big Tobacco.
That is why WE must educate the public, why WE must let our voices be heard… because WE, at the end of each and every day, when we’re up against the tyranny of this oligarchy which we each live at the mercy of… that’s all we’ve got left.
Just recently, in response to the World Health Organization’s stance on wishing to force 178 countries to impose harsh restrictions upon the entire e-cigarette market, 53 of the top scientists in their respective fields wrote an open letter to the organization’s Director General, Margaret Chan. This letter warned the WHO not to impose those strict sanctions upon devices that are, in the words written in that letter, “part of the solution,” to tobacco addiction.
In this letter these scientists argue that labeling these products as ‘Tobacco Products’ will “jeopardise (Sic) a major opportunity to slash disease and deaths caused by smoking,” as explained by Reuters.
“These products could be among the most significant health innovations of the 21st century – perhaps saving hundreds of millions of lives. The urge to control and suppress them as tobacco products should be resisted,” wrote the scientists.
So what have we got so far?
E-cigarettes are seen as a “threat” by the World Health Organization, as well as “part of the solution” by a group of leading scientists attempting to quell their fears.
E-cigarettes contain no tobacco and no smoke, yet the FDA wishes to label them as ‘Tobacco Products’ to restrict their access and all but ensure that Big Tobacco is the lone distributer.
So where might Big Tobacco stand, you may ask, when it comes to labeling the e-cigarette as a ‘Tobacco Product’? Do they really want ALL of that weight upon their already cancer ridden shoulders? Well, ironically enough, and not surprisingly at all, Big Tobacco has apparently sided with the scientists. And rightly so, I say, because if these restrictions are placed upon the e-cigarette market, despite how much more money they would probably be making, that’s just that much more money they’ll have to dump into the FDA’s coffers, more sanctions that they would be forced to contend with. And I think we all know how Big Tobacco feels about restrictions. (Just take a quick peek at their lengthy legal history for a hint… http://www.nolo.com/legal-encyclopedia/tobacco-litigation-history-and-development-32202.html)
But how about the little guy in all this, the individual consumer, the small business owner, what did we learn about them?
Well, nothing, I’m afraid, because WE have yet to speak out loud enough on this subject… WE have yet to make any real noise. And in the words of one of the authors of that open letter to the World Health Organization, “We want to make sufficient noise now before things get too set in stone.”
So educate everyone you know, about the science, about the movement, about the benefits as well as our current plight involving the FDA and the WHO. Because now is the time for our voices to be heard, the buyers, users and sellers of these futuristic little contraptions, these fancy looking battery powered devices that are literally saving lives.
Let them all know about this crazy Smoke-Free World that we’re ACTUALLY creating!!! And we can only hope that the noise we make will be sufficient enough.
Peace and Love… Always!!!
